The Ladies of Charity is a ministry focused on providing essentials and gift items to mothers and babies. A typical Layette contains diapers, blankets, onesies and a 5-piece clothing set. In addition to these essential items, each layette includes:
A book to encourage a mother and child bonding and the first steps in reading.
A rattle – to help with parent child bonding and to provide an easy way to assess a baby’s developmental milestones.
A hand made item – lovingly created by an LOC volunteer. A tangible sign to the layette recipient of God’s love in the world and the caring of strangers. These items often become family heirlooms that are passed down to future generations.
The purchase of items included in each layette is supported by donations and fundraising. Each layette also includes handmade items created by members. Layettes are packed by member volunteers and given to organizations that serve the needs of expectant mothers. Chief among these organizations are Rosalie Hall, a department of Catholic Guardian Services, Good Counsel Homes, and Richmond University and Staten Island University Hospitals. In 2018, 570 layettes were delivered for mothers and babies.
